Document Summary

Psyc 102 - lecture 8 - individual differences. Believed language learned in same way everything else is learned. Environment reinforces learning & language is learned. Often, words we learned are not reinforced. Surface errors made by ppl not corrected by normal speakers of language, as long as we get deep structure of sentence. Some sort of pre wiring in brain to be able to learn language. Evidence that there must be something in our brains making us able to learn language. However, needs to be something helping us learn language, cannot be something that helps us learn specific language. If there are 2 theories that neither completely explains what we are interested in, they are combined. Language developed tied to cognitive development, tied to maturation & experience. Interaction b/w children & mature speakers & we know it is hard to learn language so we simplify speech to help infants learn language.
