Document Summary
Biological factors: genetic in uence: if you have a family member with an anxiety disorder you are 4-6 times more likely to develop an anxiety disorder in comparison to individuals without family history. There is a non-speci c risk factor: neuroanatomy: neutral fear circuit ********* 1) thalamus = part of the brain that has several functions such as relaying of sensory and motor signals to the cerebral cortex, and the regulation of sleep, consciousness and alertness. It is involved in sensory perception and regulation of motor functions. 2) amygdala = almond-shaped mass of grey matter inside each cerebral hemisphere, involved with the experiencing of emotions. There are two amygdalae per person, with one amygdala on each side of the brain. They are thought to be part of the limbic system within the brain, which is responsible for emotions, survival instincts and memory. It contains a number of small nuclei with a variety of functions.
