Application of psychological theory and research to law enforcement. Police psychologists can help: ensure law enforcement agencies hire the best possible officers, give the best possible education and training, support them to do the best job possible. Police or law enforcement agencies: bureaucracies created by governing bodies to maintain public order & safety by ensuring compliance with laws, rules, & regulations. Powers limited by jurisdiction/powers of governing body & by jurisdictional laws/policies. Agencies are diverse and people may fall under jurisdiction of multiple agencies policing in canada. Early history of law enforcement can be traced to colonial days in france and england. Early history involved appointment of officials to patrol the streets. By about the 1700s we see the creation of police forces to address increased crime that coincided with urbanization. Objective was to detect and investigate crime.
