Defined by release of chemical messengers in blood cells to reach target cells. Paracrine - refers to stimulation of adjacent cells. Pheromones - chemicals stimulating cells of another organism. Signals released by diff systems can have diff meanings. Involves use of circulatory system to transmit chemical messengers. Vary in structure & function based on type of hormone they bind to. Peptide hormones - cannot penetrate cell membrane on their own. Receptors embedded into membrane like neurotransmitter receptors. Steroids - lipophilic & easily directly pass through cell membrane. Receptors are more frequently found floating on intracellular fluid. Each exert influence on cells in same way.
