Psyc 308 - lecture 7 - the psychoanalytic approach. 2 broad approaches to historiography tradition/celebratory & critical/new history (western) philosophical background. James - an american pragmatist & empiricist. In both germany & america, there is still not really a discipline called psychology in the early 1900s. & as you might remember in furumoto on danziger: wundtian, clinical, & Galtonian forms of investigations emerged in 1890s, but galtonian (mental testing) eventually won out. Used to show higher cognitive processes enabling us to understand (i. e. experimental self-observation) sensations. Idea of higher mental processes required to make sense of external stimuli is rationalist. Indirect sources of objective psychological knowledge studied via. Language, myth, customs products of human mind & another way of investigating the mind. To wundt experimental self-observation is descriptive but inner aspect is explanatory. Mind is creative & experience could not be predicted from initial conditions, as in physics .
