PSYC 362 Lecture 9: CHAPTER 9
Document Summary
What we already know about intimate relationships. Belief: an idea or theory about what the world is actually like. Value: an idea about what a person wants or what the world should be like. Lay relationship theories: use the term to distinguish the informal beliefs and values that laypeople accumulate from the explicit theories and empirical data gathered by researchers. General lay theories: we have beliefs and values about relationships in general. Specific lay theories: we have beliefs and values about particular relationships we are experiencing or have experienced in the past. 3 targets of the knowledge: self, partner and relationship. Expectations: the predictions about what is likely to happen in the future in a particular relationship, often but not always based on general beliefs about how relationships function. Locus of control: a general belief, suggesting 2 different orientations. Internal locus of control: the power to achieve their goals lies within themselves.
