PSYC 389 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Drive Theory, Homeostasis, Hypothalamus
Document Summary
Great example is the rat study, 3 groups had different diets (over fed, regular, underfed), after. Physiological needs/motivation/behaviour make us act to achieve homeostasis again exposing rats to their respective diets they were then allowed to eat how they wanted. The 3 groups at the end of the study had similar weights again. When needs not met, well-being deteriorates (physical/psychological well-being) Psychological vs implicit needs harder to distinguish differences. Psychological: constant, needs all people have, such as to feel in control, capable, belonging. Implicit: variable across individuals due to different life experience/development, need to achieve. Needs direct attention + behavior (does so differently tho: deficiency needs: emergency changes in behavior (eat, urgency emotions: anxiety/stress/relief, growth needs: subtle shift in behavior (job, position emotions: interest/hope/vitality. Drive = psychological discomfort as result of bio deficits. Drive energizes/directs behavior that serves body needs (helps return to homeostasis)
