PSYC 391 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Social Learning Theory, Fetus, Sensation Seeking
Document Summary
Lecture 2: theories and etiologies of intimate partner violence. Etiologies and theories of ipv: no one cause, no one theory to truly and fully explain the pervasiveness of this phenomenon. Individual: being a previous victim of violence, alcoholism, mental and personality disorders. Community: social disorganization, strain theory, high population densities, high unemployment rates. Society: attitudes about violence at the societal level, cultural and societal acceptance, gender roles, some cultures and religions more condoning on violence, social inequities in groups. Two ways to exert compliance: direct (direct use of force when women are not compliant with the norms. In essence, societal gender inequalities increase the propensity. If there were no gender inequalities there would be no violence . In countries with greater disparities there tends to be greater rates of ipv. Gender inequality does not equal no ipv (nordic paradox nordic european countries still have high rates even though there is less disparity)
