Impression management - term used to describe tactics people employ when presenting themselves publicly. Actors in social situations attempt to act in way in attempt to avoid being embarrassed/embarrassing others. Goffman wrote that actors seldom accept shame/embarrassment passively. They try to manage it by avoidance if possible.
