BIO 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Potato Starch, Gametophyte, Chondrus Crispus
Document Summary
No cell wall, but they do have skeletal material made of bands of protein. The edges appear scalloped because the bands of protein are overlapping. They slide against each other to change the shape of the cell. Only eukaryotic phylum where there is no sex or meiosis. 3 membrane chloroplasts, thylakoids the same as green algae. They take up amino acids and sugars from their environment. Most diverse group of marine seaweeds, 15000-20000 species. Nori porphyra or pyropia, huge industry in asia. The protein is phycoerithrin, found in phycobilisomes, also the source of their color. Used to create a gel like texture in foods etc. Chondrus crispus used to be harvested around here for its carrageenan. Now it mostly comes from eucheuma, because it is cheaper near the equator. Red algae do have a little cellulose , but mostly carrageenan, or agar. Agar is also a gelling agent, used to solidify medium in microbiology.
