Document Summary

Paul through times: marcion was a fan of paul. We do not yet have canon, but several pauline letters, the gospels. They were not yet put together as new testament. Marcion was the first to say we should have a set of authoritative books to live by. Marcion says we do not need four gospels, we should only have one because all say the same thing, but have contradictions. Said we did not need the old testament books just jesus and a great interpreter of jesus" teachings (paul). Marcion said do not need that, only jesus. Only from marcion"s challenge do scholars debate over what books to include in the canon (4th century). By 2nd century, the old testament had already been put together (though not in the same order as today). Thinking with paul is a catalyst that started the formulation of the canon, which began with marcion: augustine (4th-5th c). Now christianity is the official religion of roman.
