ANTH 1001H Lecture 7: Race+sex
Document Summary
Causes of physical variation: genes, environment and culture. Race and sex are being studies together as these are physical differences present in human populations. Physical differences here refers to outer characteristics that are popularly characterized as race and sex, but also those that are invisible but just as real. People nowadays give too much credit to genes, see it as determining just about everything, which is a big mistake: environment: physical factors that influence the phenotype of individuals also influence phenotype patterns of whole populations. Example: how much solar radiation you receive, what kinds of foods you"re able to eat. These are environmental factors that can shape how your genes are expressed: culture: influences our physical forms, not just our ideas. Knowledge on how to heal fatal diseases comes from culture. People think of culture as being like an environmental factor, because there are some similarities, but we should treat them as separate factors.
