Document Summary

We have already looked at how neurons work to transmit information around the body and central nervous system. Chapter 16 looks at how sensory systems work to transmit information from our environment to our. The special senses that are examined in this section include sight, hearing, balance or equilibrium, taste and smell. I have put some information in here concerning the sense of touch as well, although that is not considered one of the 5 special senses. Instead touch is a general sense because sensory receptors for touch are found all over the body, and not concentrated in specific organs. You are responsible information presented in this study guide as well as information in chapter 15. Be able to list and describe the basic types of sensory receptors. Understand the concept of a receptive field and give examples of a few types.
