Carbon based life vs. silicone based life. Our common sense serves us quite well is discerning living vs non- living. The dividing in line is not as clear i. e. Most forms of life on earth have common properties. Elsewhere in the universe life can be quite different. Most living organisms on earth hare the following properties. There are not enough resources for all organisms to survive therefore it is survival of the fittest which will trigger adaptations. There must be diversity within the populations i. e. polar bears having thicker fur than others. Some traits will increase the chances of survival while other will not. Long period of time is needed for organisms to survive and reproduce in order to pass on heritable traits to increase survival. All life forms on earth are made of cells. A cell contains living matter and is separated from its" surroundings by a cell membrane.
