How do people keep track of their data: card indexes (rolodex): old school, but it works, paper. Thursday, september 21, 2017: excel spreadsheets, nowadays we tend to use applications which were designed to store information in a format which facilitates asking questions about the data, these are called database management systems. Database: a collection of related data stored in a manner so it can be retrieved as needed. Database management system (dbms): software used to create, maintain, update, protect, and access databases. A database typically consists of: tables: collection of related records. Relational database: data from several tables is tied together (related) using a eld that the tables have in common. Primary key: speci c eld that uniquely identi es the records in that table (e. g. , a drivers licence number uniquely identi es you for police checks, or a student number uniquely identi es you for school purposes, or sin for revenue canada).
