COIS 1010H Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Relational Database Management System, Database, Rolodex
Document Summary
Why do we collect data: so we can extract information from/about the data, create patterns and make analyses. How do people keep track of their data: card indexes (rolodex): old school but it works, paper, excel spreadsheets. In applications which were designed to store information in a format which facilitates asking questions about the data: these are called database management systems. Looking for some efficient way to store data. Theory of database systems have been around since the 40"s. Database: a collection of related data stored in a manner so it can be retrieved as needed. System that wraps around the data what you use to access the information. Database management system (dbms): software used to create, maintain, protect, and access databases. Relational database: data from several tables tied together (related) using field(s) that the tables have in common: developed in the early 1970"s, all based on math know it is concrete and that it really works.
