Canada a major contributor to the global environmental movement. Tends to follow a pattern of rising environmental concern, economic downturn, abandonment of environmental agenda. Environmentalist agenda strongly opposed by the current federal government. Focus on the protection of wilderness areas and the conservation of resources through science based management. Roots in the nineteenth century and continue to think day. Banff national park established in 1885 primarily for tourism. Algonquin provincial park established in 1893 for the purpose of protecting the timber supply. Increasingly preservation of nature priorities also began to influence parks and protected areas management. Looking at wilderness as a place to visit. Parks not just about economic development but protecting nature. Civil rights and anti-war movements associated with the progressive politics of the 1960"s began to connect to environmental issues.
