Social change, poliics and the death penalty in postwar canada. Ronald turpin robbed the red roster restaurant in toronto of : copped pulled him over for a dead light. He then jumped into the police car and was quickly apprehended: convicted and sentenced to death by hanging. Arthur lucas was also awaiing execuion: convicted for the murder of an undercover drug oicer, killed 2 people in a drug deal gone wrong. Diefenbaker was a lawyer, believed in individual rights: defended people who couldn"t defend themselves, felt that those convicted of their crimes should face the sentences brought against them. Death penalty was sill applied to people convicted of murder: paricularly death of a police oicer. By the 1960s people were quesioning whether the death penalty was a good choice, capital punishment was no beter than murder: barbaric tool, wrongfully convicted people could be executed. Final decision was made by the prime minister in cabinet.
