Overview of east asia in late 19th & 20th c: opium war (1839-41)- lose of chinese presige and power, meiji restoraion (1868) Sino-japanese war 1894-5- change in east power relaions: growth of japanese empire (russo-japanese war, colonizaion of korea, taiwan, rise of modern naionalism in east asia. 1911 chinese revoluion: chinese civil war 1927-1936;1946-9. Second world war, 1939-45: us occupaion of japan, 1945-52, chinese communist triumph, 1949, korean war 1950-3, vietnam war c. 1950s-1975. Themes/ common characterisics: dramaic and revoluionary changes. Interplay of regional and global forces: role of state propaganda and rhetoric, agency of people.
