The study of changes in behavior and mental processes: child development, adolescent development, aging, family, excepional development, sexuality. To capture change, must study things in the context of ime. Measure a speciic variable at ime 1, then measure again at a later point (ime 2) The development is what is diferent between ime 1 and ime 2. The interval between the imes and the number of imes vary greatly. Perry preschool project: 1962 (ages 3 and 4) Inner city, african-american: 123 children, randomly divided into two groups. Control group did not go to any preschool: followed them unil age 40. Issues with longitudinal designs: following over ime takes ime, very expensive, paricipant mortality (drop out or cant ind, historic efects (events that only happen to this kids e. g. 9-11) Measure diferent age groups across a variety of ages all at a single point in ime. At 1 ime observe the diferent age groups in an area.
