Summary: less serious, no more than 6 months in prison or a fine, aka misdemeanours. Indictable: more serious crimes, some are automatically considered indictable offences, aka felonies. But there are hybrid offences: prosecution decides whether to proceed with a summary or an indictable. What does it mean to be held in remand: requires maximum levels of security, small cells, two or three other people (because of overcrowding, no program access, lengthy periods, uncertainty, costly, consequences. Loss of employment, loss of accommodation, separation from family, need for child care, missed opportunities: denied their freedom without being found guilty.
