Community
-Community can mean many things:
oGeographical area (geographical communities) – Peterborough
oSocial systems and patterns of interaction (communities of association) – Trent University
oA shared identity (identity-based communities) LGBTQ community, religious groups
-Examples of each?
Types of Community Work
-Community service
oWorking with service users and with the service system to enhance accessibility and utility of services
-Community development
oWorking with community members to advance a (local) community in terms of its economy, security, social
connectedness, etc.
-Community organizing
oOrganizing protests, raising consciousness and mobilizing disadvantaged communities
-Community Education
oEngaging community members to become critically aware of their community and possible work towards
community development or organizing
Consensus vs. Conflict
Consensus
-Partnerships within communities
-Positive change stems from building capacity and collaboration amongst community members
Dissensus
-Society is divided between the privileged and the oppressed
-"intense pressure" is needed to influence the powerful and the privileged
-efforts towards partnerships and collaboration can mask inherent inequalities
Community Development and Gentrification
Gentrification
-a typically "poor" or "working class" neighbourhood becomes more desirable
-increase in desirability can be unplanned or purposeful – i.e. revitalization
-development increases in the neighbourhood to meet increase in demand
-costs of living in the community increase
-landlords evict long term residents to take advantage of the rising market, rent goes up
-home owners sell to take advantage of the rising market, housing prices go up
-decreased tolerance for community-based social services amongst new residents
-mass displacement of the working class communities and their institution

-ways to combat gentrification in community development
ocreation of "displacement-free zones"
oinclusionary housing or zoning policy
orewarding developers for including social housing
