In the 16th century, colonial powers started sending out explorations in order to get through the continent, and then when they couldn"t find one more south, they started looking through the arctic. The british 19th century expeditions were more and more important as after the napoleon wars, the british had all these captions on their hands. Therefore, they sent them out in order to discover the passage. They also had a role in reinforcing the british superiority.
