Document Summary
They serve as a focus to the public to help put history into an interesting exhibition and give facts in a digestible way to the common public. The northwest passage was a supposed route that would be easy to traverse through in order to get to china, and thus, find a way to trade. For about 400 years, it was merely an idea that was going to be a shortcut through the continent, and more easily access trade markets. In the 16th century, colonial powers started sending out explorations in order to get through the continent, and then when they couldn"t find one more south, they started looking through the arctic. The british 19th century expeditions were more and more important as after the napoleon wars, the british had all these captions on their hands. Therefore, they sent them out in order to discover the passage. They also had a role in reinforcing the british superiority.
