Document Summary
Prokaryotes: unicellular, many prokaryotes are symbionts in eukaryotic hosts. Symbiosis is the relationship between two species when they are continuously and direct contact with each other. Its just one kind of symbiosis. commensal relationship- one benefits or none benefits. Parasitic/ pathogenic-one benefits and one has a negative effect on it. N-fixing bacteria on legume roots- nitrogen from air to convert to useful form used in protein synthesis. (mutualism) 200-1000 species of bacteria and archaea in our digestive tract (some mutualistic, some commensal and some pathogenic) Bioluminescent bacteria and deep-sea organisms-luminescence from prokaryotes harboured in their (cid:862)lighti(cid:374)g regio(cid:374)(cid:863)-commensal: chloroplasts are not found in prokaryotes. But they can have chlorophyll (photosynthetic membrane) and can photosynthesise. (well, some of them: have plasma membrane and cell wall but no nuclear membrane. Infolding of outside membrane for specialised membranes like thylakoid membranes in some cyanobacteria, and respiratory membranes in aerobic prokaryotes.
