In horizontally transmitted diseases, the number of new hosts is proportional to the number of disease progeny. It isn"t dependent on the fitness of the host: for some, it can spread and infect others and you again, diseases only transmitted vertically must, evolve over time to be less virulent, can be transmitted horizontally as well. In vertically transmitted diseases, the number of new hosts is dependent on host fitness: virulence: the mortality rate of the host due to the pathogen, direct death caused by the pathogen. Immunity can sometimes be lost: why vaccines sometimes need boosters. Isolation: separate the sick individuals from the healthy individuals.
