Document Summary

Silicates make up 95% of the earth"s crust, but the remaining non-silicates have much more variety to them. Iron oxides must contain fe and o in quantities that result in a charge of 0. What we see most commonly in everyday life is iron 3, which takes on a reddish hue and we know as rust. Sulfides lead sulfide is known as galena, and iron sulfide is known as pyrite, commonly called fool"s gold. These are zero valent forms of metals on the periodic table. It is the pure single element, no carbon, sulfide, etc. Commonly known examples are iron, gold, silver, and even diamonds. It"s important that these have a charge of zero! Ex: ag+ (silver with a positive charge) when in water is an extremely toxic substance for humans. However, some people with allow silver 0 to sit in water and then drink it for supposed health benefits. Small details at the atomic level make a massive difference.
