Understanding the literacy of the book, even if they may not understand the words yet; understanding what the storyline is. Chinese books are written in characters and from right to left instead of left to right: the structure if the book. Retelling stories: very important for beginning to learn to read, accuracy in retelling stories influenced by 4 factors, chara(cid:272)teristi(cid:272) of the (cid:272)hild(cid:859)s la(cid:374)guage, structure of the book, familiarity of the book, past experiences with books in general. Early attempts include the creation of marks that look like writing and include: making letters, organizing print in 2-dimensional space. Organizing the environment: to support reading and writing. Very contextual; connected to what the students are learning at that point: labels and signs, charts (flip-chart, lists. Components of el knowledge: cultural views and functions of written language expecting meaning from written language. Expecting purpose from written language: nature and forms of written language. Understanding that oral and written language are related.
