Genet 302: lecture 1- early chromosome research: discovery of chromosomes, discovery: chromosomes were discovered in 1800s. Chromosomes mean colour bodies, mainly because they could be stained: carl rabl discovered that chromosomes are not destroyed during interphase. Chromosomes were just very condensed and associated with proteins during interphase. Hence, appeared as a large blob: chromosome theory of heredity. In 1902, this was proposed by boveri and sutton. In 1910, this was confirmed by stevens and morgans: theodor boveri. Embryos of sea urchins with correct number of chromosomes developed normally. A change in the number of chromosomes led to an abnormal phenotype: walter sutton. Grasshoppers has pair of homologous chromosomes in diploid cells. Haploid cells (gametes) got one of each pair of chromosomes: nettie stevens. Discovered that gene for eye colour in drosophila is located on the x chromosome. The white gene in the x chromosome is responsible for no pigment in eyes.
