Jewish people see palestine as the promise or holy land - a gift to them from god. In reality most jews were pushed out of palestine by the christians who don"t like them very much, however some where allowed to come back under the rule of the arabic muslims. European jews couldn"t farm, as farming was done primarily by slaves, and the christians didn"t want the jewish people do be slave masters, or masters over any christians. Due to this, many jewish people became business men. The jewish people became the back bone of the economy. By the time of the industrial revolution, lots of jews had jobs that became more important in the new cities and christian farming fell by the wayside. Became perdomiant in 1875 to 1900, however is still important in modern times. Basically, zionism is the idea that the jewish people should have there own state.
