Document Summary

In this lecture the definitions of disease and illness are discussed. Disease is the abnormal, medically defined changes in the structure or functioning of the human body. Illness (or si(cid:272)k(cid:374)ess(cid:895) is a(cid:374) i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual"s e(cid:454)perie(cid:374)(cid:272)e or su(cid:271)je(cid:272)ti(cid:448)e per(cid:272)eptio(cid:374) of la(cid:272)k of physical or mental well-being and consequent inability to function normally in social roles. The main difference between the definitions are that one is subjective and one is objective. There are also two types of diseases, infectious and non-infectious/communicable. The definition of infectious disease involves a specific infectious agent infecting a susceptible host through transmission. There are three types of infectious disease transmission: outbreak, epidemic, and pandemic. An outbreak is an occurrence of a few new cases in a localised area, whereas an epidemic is the occurrence of new cases across a country or number of countries. A pandemic is the most severe, and crosses many international borders, infecting large numbers of people.
