Document Summary

Duration and combinations of durations in patterns are the basis of rhythm. Basic terms for rhythm: beat, accent, tempo, meter. If rhythm refers to the durational element in music, then all music has rhythm. O(cid:373)eti(cid:373)es, it"s the predo(cid:373)i(cid:374)a(cid:374)t ele(cid:373)e(cid:374)t; so(cid:373)eti(cid:373)es its just o(cid:374)e fa(cid:272)tor a(cid:373)o(cid:374)g (cid:373)a(cid:374)y: sometimes its almost the only element. Most music also has a beat a regular recurrence of pulses. Beat tends to draw us to music. Given a series of beats some will usually stand out from others. To accent a beat is to make it stand out. This can occur in several ways: dynamic accent, 1,2,3,1,2,3, a note is louder for emphasis, pitch accent, durational accent. May form recurrent patterns or may be irregular. The rate at which beats occur: the (cid:862) peed(cid:863) of a pie(cid:272)e or passage. Again, like dynamics terms for change: accelerando, ritardando, fermata(hold) Most western music organizes beats into a recurrent pattern known as meter.
