Ethics: study of good conduct, character, and motives - determine what is good or valuable for all people. Requires you to be critically reflective, exploring values, behaviours, actions, judgements, and justifications. Code of ethics: foundation for nurses" ethical practice = accepted by all members of a profession. Serves the profession when questions arise about practicing ethically and working through ethical challenges. Used in conjunction w/ professional standards, laws and regulations guiding practice. Accountability: grounded in the moral principles of fidelity - respect for dignity, worth and self- determination of patients and others. Being able to accept responsibility or to account for one"s actions and refers to being answerable to someone else for something one has down. Answerability: being able to offer reasons and explanations to other people for aspects of nursing practice. Can seek advice of other hcp"s or search for evidence. Balance accountability to patient, profession, employer and society.
