Lecture class 1: aboriginal history and mental health issues. Some aboriginals act out due to the history, and the loss of who they were. Determinants of health: some of the things that were lost were culture values. White privilege is your history being part of the core curriculum and mine being taught as an elective some people may not know their own culture. ***understanding yourself if key to working with aboriginal, or anyone. A policy developed to take indians out; policy by gov"t in order to bring civilization; however, some residential schools were uncivilized. Ptsd pulled away from families whom you may never see again, you won"t speak your own language, you clean, etc. Substance abuse was a coping mechanism that was introduced. Traditional values (or family values) lost when generations after generations, aboriginal people are taken away from their family. Understanding and support is important to working with aboriginal.
