Influence gene expression & synthesis of intracellular proteins: testosterone can enter nucleus of muscle cell and alter genetic expression of muscle proteins. Anabolic steroids: synthetically produced, mimic anabolic properties of endogenous steroid hormones: liver toxicity, elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, decreased hdl (can cause heart attacks, depressed spermatogenesis, lowered testosterone production, masculinization, lowered voice in women and children, clitoral enlargement in women, increased aggressiveness.
