Lecture 10: role of the adipose tissue in glucose homeostasis (feb. 3/16) Briefly introduce role of white adipose tissue (wat) in physiology. Describe classic roles of wat metabolism on glucose homeostasis (+ comm. with organs) To describe pathophysiology of wat function in conditions of nutrient excess (ie obesity) Muscle = direct and indirect targets of adipokines (how fat speaks to muscle) Irisine = myokine (secreted cell from muscles that can speak to adipocytes) Chemical messenger (cytokines/hormones) for cell communication: research in adipose tissue has grown over time, more than just calories: additional roles of fat in physiological processes. Increased fat around pericardium will increase atherosclerosis and bp increase risk of cv disease. Muscle: contains many fac cells, which can differentiate into white adipose cells under certain situations (age or dystrophy in diabetes) email her . Skin/hair: adipocytes and fat production = needed to wound healing + stim hair growth.
