Clinical psychology: the filed of practice and research that is directed toward helping people who suffer from psychological problems and disorders. Mental health professionals: psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counselling psychologists, counsellors found in businesses and schools. Psychologists are more likely to work with people with diagnosable disorders while counsellors work with people who have regular daily life stresses: psychiatric social workers, psychiatric nurses. Biological treatments: attempt to relieve the disorder by directly altering bodily processes, 3 main types: drugs, electroconvulsive shock therapy, psychosurgery, drugs nearly always produce undesirable side effects. Typical antipsychotic drugs: the 1st to be developed and are still at least as effective as newer drugs in relieving the positive symptoms of schizophrenia (decrease dopamine, don"t reduce the negative symptoms (may worsen negative symptoms) Interfere with motor-control processes: 40% develop tardive dykinesia. Atypical antipsychotic drugs: relieve the negative symptoms of schizophrenia as well as the positive ones.
