Consciousness Chapter 6:
- Qualia: The 'what it is like' character of mental states. The way it feels to have mental
states such as pain, seeing red, smelling a rose, etc.

- stages of sleep
Stage 1; “transition period b/w wakefulness & sleep = light stage, brain produces
high amplitude of theta waves = slow brain waves, last 5-10 min, sudden body
jerk feeling
Stage 2; about 20min, brain produces bursts of rapid rhythmic brain waves
activity known as sleep spindles = you are asleep, muscles are more relaxed your
breathing & heart rate are lower & are harder to awaken.
Stage 3: beginning of a very deep, slow brain waves known as delta waves,
people less responsive, when the delta waves dominant EEG pattern = Stage 4
Stage 3 &4; = slow-wave sleep, body relaxed, decreased brain activity & hard to
waken, 20-30min of stage 4, EEG pattern changes as you go “back through” stage
2 &3. WITHIN 60-90 MIN OF GOING TO SLEEP; YOU COMPLETED A
CYCLE OF 1-2-3-4-3-2
- sleep deprivation
short-term total sleep deprivation = 45h without sleep
long-term total sleep deprivation = more than 45h without sleep
partial deprivation = <5h/night for atleast 2 consecutive days
