You are you the one who is conscious of it. Intimately connected with process of selective attention: measuring states of consciousness. Physiological measures: establish correspondence between bodily states and mental processes. Conscious, preconscious and unconscious: controlled vs. automatic processing. Controlled: voluntary use of attention and conscious effort. Automatic: performed with little or no conscious effort. But reduce changes of finding new ways to approach problems. Facilitates divided attention (ability to perform more than one activity at the same time: but is limited and more difficult when tasks require similar resources. Texting and driving: windows to the brain. Patients with blindsight (blind in part of a visual field but in special tests, respond to stimuli in a visual field though they say they cannot see)
