3. 2 prenatal development, infancy, and early childhood: physical development. Point of conception to birth (~266 days/38 weeks: divided into 3 trimesters (0-12, 12-25, 25-38) Germinal period (first 2 weeks: creation of fertilized eggs. Once sperm penetrates egg, chemical reaction occurs that kills all other sperms that try to also penetrate the egg: cell division, zygote attaches to uterine wall ending germinal period now called an embryo. Cephalacaudal- growth usually starts happening at the head then downward to the feet. Proximodist- growth from the middle outward to the extremities: brain also grows from the middle outwards, the back of our brain develops first. Growth is more rapid in infancy than during any other period after birth.
