Modular parsing: only use informaion about current sentence structure and category of word (noun, verb, etc. , only use meaning and interpretaion during recovery. Automaic parsing wo interpretaion is fast & eicient so modular parsing is a good idea. Structure we pick is not efected by context. Interacive parsing: select candidate structure only if it is reasonable given its interpretaion. Context and garden path sentences (how do we choose between modular and interacive?) Do garden-path efects change with context: no modular parsing, yes interacive parsing. John knew the teacher . (from school (noun phrase)) or (wanted the apple: expect people to select from school bc of context, wanted is disambiguaied region bc you have to back up and change interpretaion, ambiguous, slow. John knew that the teacher wanted an apple: much faster, that helps interpret, no ambiguity, fast.
