PSYCO275 Lecture 14: Lec. 14. Last Class Before Midterm. Oct. 6
Document Summary
Stimulation of the brain: electrical, chemical, magnetic, or optogenetic. Optogenetic is using light to stimulate genetically engineered channels. Electrical stimulation is when electrodes are placed in or on the brain. It is the application of small electrical currents via bipolar electrode. You can identify pathways within the brain if stimulation in one area evokes a response in another part of the brain. It typically has immediate e ects, and it is used in humans during brain surgery to test for function of area under operation. Chemical stimulation is when there is an injection of neuroactive substances into the brain. Neurotransmitters can act to excite the brain cells, or you can use di erent types of drugs. If you want it all over the brain, you can infuse it into the blood stream. Infusing it directly is very quick, but microdialysis is more natural.
