PSYCO327 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Achievement Orientation, Sleep Deprivation, Motivation
Document Summary
Important microsystem: classroom school district community. Also an arena where biological, cognitive, psychological, and social forces interact and play out to affect the adolescent experience and development. Classroom size findings mixed: ex. no difference between 25-student class and 35-student class with respect to grades, some students benefit from small classroom setting while others may perform worse. School culture: performance oriented vs. mastery oriented (emphasize self-improvement, competitive vs. cooperative, demandingness vs. responsiveness. Tracking - assigning students to a particular curriculum based on presumed abilities: not optimal educational experiences (ex. could misplace a student) Configurations affect number and timing of transitions adolescents will experience. Sea of new faces while old friend left behind semi-stranger or semi-friends. Transitions are both growth inducing and potential tipping points; both false/fresh starts. More likely to be from lower ses, ethnic minority, and immigrant families. Other research found the number of school transition positively correlated with negative outcomes (ex. decreased self-esteem, poor academic achievement, less extracurricular participation)
