Includes things we have control over and those that we can"t control. We have controlled responses to things we cant control, ex makeup to cover scars. Appearance is not objective, but interpreted and assessed. My presentation of self is filtered by what you see and how you interpret what you see. There is nothing deviant about a certain appearance, it comes from our assessment of it. Like all norms, appearance norms are gendered, raced, and classed. Violate, challenge, or disrupt cultural standards or norms. There are social consequences or results in appearance deviations. Subculture: group whose members share values and norms that may differ from those of the larger culture. Choosing to look a certain way, knowing the cultural implications behind it. These elements of appearance may be out of control of the individual but it still brings about assumptions about the person. Appearance norms: shared ideas, standards, and values related to appropriate/inappropriate or desirable/undesirable "presentations of self"
