Deviance is a highly contested concept (people disagree), reflecting the. Characterized by disagreement about how deviance should be defined. Objective subjective dichotomy: some sociological focus on the qualities of deviance (harm, violation of norms, etc. ) and some focus on the process by which we come to view certain people, behaviors, characteristics as being deviant. We will know a deviant person by the acts they do. Focus = how some things, but not others, get to be defined as deviant. Focus on the perception of and reactions of deviance. Issues: our perception of harm changes over time. (i. e. homosexuality perceived by many to be associated with a degree of harm, use of marijuana, our perception of harm is highly subjective. Issues: people have different values and norms (folkways vs mores vs laws, folkways: informal norms (i. e. everyday customs, things like standard of dress, issues of hygiene, respecting people"s personal space. 4 definitions of deviance associated with subjective side.
