Media (tv previously), now is more spread out. Musicians have influence (young people consume music at a higher rate) Lots of studies done to look at what influences young people"s attitudes. It is perceived that youth have more and more unstructured unsupervised time. Can be related to celebrities (what they endorse in) Left more unsupervised, more time off (with friends and not under parental supervision) Eg. sports, clubs, personal development music / dance lessons. Increase in women being involved in masculine sports ie. soccer, hockey. Upper middle class children, especially girls, have their time increasingly structured. Hudonet al. found that about 41. 6% of boys and 22. 8% of girls in grade 11 played sports. Men dominate hockey, rugby, football, soccer, squash, racquetball, baseball and weightlifting. Girl tend to sports like figure skating, equestrianism, swimming, bowling and cross country skiing. More women are engaging in typically masculine activities like body building and fitness training.
