ANSC 1210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: National Pingtung University, Wield, Weaning
Document Summary
In preparation for this lecture, the class was given access to a website that explored some ethical dilemmas. As a first step, students had to answer 12 multiple-choice questions. As a result of the answers that were given, the program gave each respondent a profile of their ethical view . The profile was built on five moral philosophies and since animal welfare philosophies have not yet been covered in the course, they are summarized here: According to the contractarian viewpoint, morality is based on agreement. Ethical obligations originate in mutual agreements or contracts between people. Mutual cooperation is in all of our interests. In cooperating we make agreements, and it is these agreements that bring ethical obligations into being. Non-human animals cannot make agreements because they lack the understanding and control needed to enter a contractual arrangement. As a result, animals neither create nor have moral duties.
