Originates from cells of the anterior pituitary. Promotes tissue and body growth in young animals (esp longitudinal growth until skeleton is finalized. During fetal life, gh does not stimulate growth, this role is played by insulin like growth. Protein sequence differs a lot between species. Injecting gh from other species will not have much reactivity. However, igf1 is very similar (reactivity) across species. Stimulate igf1 production by the liver, igf1 stimulates cartilage and bone growth and milk production by the mammary gland (indirect) Gh receptor is a member of the interleukin (cytokine) family. Very precise dual regulation by hypothalamic ghrh and ghih. Hypothalamus receives info from external stimuli and nutrients in the blood. Follows a circadian pattern, increased during sleep. High aa and low glucose content in plasma both stimulate gh secretion (high protein diet, long fasting such as during sleep) Exercising and stress also increase gh secretion.
