Document Summary

Dna(deoxyribose nucleic acid)- molecule that encodes genetic info of living things. Basic units that make up dna molecule are nucleotides. Adenine and guanine- double-ringed structures known as purines. Thymine and cytosine- single-ringed structures known as pyramidines. Base pairs are held together by hydrogen bonds. *nitrogenous bases are the steps on the ladder* If dna in one cell were laid end to end- 3 metres (6 billion base pairs long) To fit this massive amount of info into each cell, dna is coiled upon itself to form chromosomes. Histones( +ve charged protein) act as spools on which dna molecule coils. Nucleosomes (coil) coiled upon themselves to form chromatin fibre. Chromatin condenses during mitosis- seen as chromosome. Before mitosis cell doubles its genetic info so each daughter cell has identical genetic info to parent cell. Free- floating nucleotides in nucleus are assembles into copy of parental dna. One daughter dna molecule is constructed entirely from free= floating nucleotides.
