BIOL 1080 Lecture 3: Lecture 3
Document Summary
Readings for lecture 4: chapter 2c pg 95-105. The categories of experimental model" systems for human medical and health research are: simulations with mathematical models/computers (in silico), mechanical and chemical techniques. In vitro and ex-vivo models (cell culture and related technologies) Does not have to be a complex organism in order to have relevance to human models: human subjects (in-vivo). The most relevant experiments but not necessarily the most insightful due to certain limitations. Ethics come into place where offering money to do a clinical trial becomes coercion. Basic experimental designs of human medical and healthcare research. Can not be used to predict/prove cause and effect" of a medicinal substance. Predicts associations/correlations" ie. consumption of tomato products is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Starts with finding an association between two things and then continuing with a hypothesis-proving study. Clinical subjects are given a medicinal treatment or a control substance/placebo.
