Differ in cell structure and location, and how they are stimulated to contract ! Skeletal and smooth muscle cells are elongated ! These muscle cells called muscle bers ! Ability to shorten or contract depends on two types of myo laments ! (myo/mys = muscle) (sacro = esh) ! Bigggest of muscle ber types (range up to 30 cm)! Also known as striated muscle (obvious strips on them)! And as voluntary muscle (only muscle type subject to conscious control)! Tires easily and must rest after short periods of activity ! Thousands of bers bundled together by connective tissue which provides support and strength ! Each ber inclosed in connective tissue called endomysium ! Then wrapped in coarser brous membrane called perimysium to form a bundle of. Many of these connected by overcoat called an epimysium which covers entire muscle ! Epimysia blend together into strong cordlike tendons or into sheetlike aponeuroses which attach to bones directly !
